I bought this watch and thought it was broken. Literally cannot see the digital readout, its black as night. Called Casio directly and they said that is the way the watch is with backlight LCD. Would send back to store but why pay restocking fee...I'll give it to my son.
The picture you see in the product description is nothing close to what you will receive.

Poor scratch resistance with some design flowsMar 16, 2009

Scratched mine in a first month and it progressed over the year. The glass is done poorly for the sports watch. It's not protected by the bezel as it should be. It's the primary reason I decided to change this watches after a year. The digital display is too dark which makes it difficult to read without illumination. The plastic band fell apart (literally) after about 10 months of use.

If all you need is a basic time function, this is OK. But I found it extremely hard to read the LEDs, difficult to maneuver through the various screens (making the dual-time, stop-watch, etc. all but useless). Very poor user interface design.
What else? Decent case but crummy band. Everything but time of day is too small to read. Illumination is not strong enough to be useful. Did I mention "hard to set"?
Basically, you get what you pay for. For just a little bit more -- $50 to $60 -- you can get a very good Casio diver's watch or chronograph that is easy to use and a lot sturdier. This one is getting exchanged right away.

"Chazal"
One of the main reasons I purchased this watch was it's stated water resistance to 100 meters. Of course no one could surviive submersion to that depth but one would hope that a product so labelled would withstand a few short swims in the ocean. Not so- there is evidence of moisture under the crystal although the watch is still working. The watch is a digital/analog combo but unfortunately the digital display is so small and poorly lit as to be almost useless. In summary, not Casio's best effort.

Bought from a retailer, but shopping on Amazon for a replacement ...
Mineral crystal? Huh?! After like the 2nd day wearing it, I glanced down to notice a small but significant scratch on the face. ARRRG! After just a few more days I noticed there were lots of little scratches starting to dull the "crystal." Though this site says mineral crystal, I believe it to be acrylic because literally just a couple seconds on my buffing wheel and the "haze" from fine scratches is gone (though the bigger ones remain). With a crystal this soft, the design of the watch with the crystal sitting HIGHER than the bezel and thus unprotected is a fatal design flaw. I guess every couple weeks I could buff it out but eventually the bigger nicks will cover the face. Quite a disappointment as the cheap crystal means I would consider this a throw-away-when-battery-dies watch. If you don't have a buffing wheel and are hard on watches, you may not get that long. :(
The digital window, as other reviewers noted, is DARK. But I kinda liked the look. It can appear almost black straight-on ... but tilt your wrist a little and the display pops clearly into view. In less than ideal light if the digital sections are hard to read, activating the backlight allows you to see them fine. Yes, in NORMAL lighting the backlight is dim, almost anemic ... but all it has to do is light up the digits in the DARK and it does that very well - in the dark. The band feels a little on the cheap side.
Really, if the crystal had held up, I'd give it 4 stars. Two starts because it does tell time, it functioned as expected, and was a nice looking watch. But in summary, the cheap, soft crystal makes me recommend that you DO NOT BUY this watch! (Unless you have a buffing wheel and are willing to buff it out every two weeks or so...)
